Decluttering your life Last weekend I finally got my bedroom closet back. I had already fully organized the main part of my place, but I had always put the closet on the back burner. There were other things that were a higher priority. The closet was basically out of sight – out of mind. Last weekend I finally got busy to organize it. The main part of organizing was just getting rid of shit that I no longer use or need. I can't throw out something that is still good. I find that wasteful. So I donated a shit ton of stuff to a local thrift store. If something was still good, but I hadn't used in the past two years, I donated it. I made an exception for things I had wanted to use during that time, but couldn't find. The closet had been this huge pile of stuff, and I could rarely find anything. Things that were no good anymore, I simply threw out. Some donation examples: I had way more pieces of luggage than anyone would need, so I kept the few pieces I always tend to use and donated the rest. There were pieces of clothing that I just don't wear anymore, but someone else might want. I got rid of a desk lamp that was perfectly good, but I had replaced with one I like better. Now I can actually walk into my closet and find what I need. My guitar cases actually fit in there with no problem. I feel like a big burden has been taken off me. I'm controlling my own space instead of letting it control me. I still have some things to do. I didn't donate any of my electronic items. Next weekend I plan to go through all that. I wanted to be able to take my time and not rush that stuff. My electronic stuff is actually in plastic drawers, organized by category, so it's not like that stuff was causing a huge amount of clutter. However, there are things that I'll never use again, so that's next weekend's project. It's important to live in a place that serves you, rather than one that controls you. I've already made past posts about cleaning and organizing my apartment. It's way, way nicer than it used to be. Fixing up my closet is only the latest in my series of getting control of my environment. Ask yourself if your current living environment serves you or if it controls you. If the latter is true, don't beat yourself up. If you've been living in disorder, that's something you created. You can create something better. You'll benefit in many ways. When you need something, you'll be able to find it instead of searching in frustration. If you need to cook something, you'll be able to quickly and easily get everything you need. You'll feel more free to invite people over if you want to. If you work out, you'll be able to do so more easily whether you work out from home or in a gym. If the latter, you'll have a workout bag all ready, so you can just grab and go. Having an environment that serves you is part of building a better life. https://communities.win/u/TigPlaze
